Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about AskAway

General

AskAway is a recruitment platform with two core modules. The Voice Interview module conducts structured competency interviews using an AI interviewer with real-time voice conversation. The CV Ranking module automates CV parsing, scoring, and shortlisting against configurable rubrics. Together, they bring consistency, speed, and auditability to your hiring process.

AskAway is built for HR teams, hiring managers, and recruitment professionals who need to process high volumes of applications consistently. It is particularly suited to organisations that require auditable, defensible hiring decisions — such as public sector bodies, regulated industries, and large enterprises.

AI Voice Interviews

AskAway uses OpenAI's Realtime API to conduct live voice conversations via WebRTC directly in the browser. You configure the role, competencies to assess, and interviewer voice. The AI interviewer then conducts a structured competency interview — asking questions, listening to responses, and following up naturally. The entire conversation is transcribed in real time and an AI-generated assessment summary is produced at the end.

Yes. AskAway offers eight distinct voice options (alloy, ash, ballad, coral, echo, sage, shimmer, and verse). You select the voice when creating an interview session. Each voice has a different character and tone.

Yes. Every turn of the conversation (both interviewer and candidate) is transcribed and stored in the database. After the interview completes, a structured assessment summary is generated and attached to the session. You can review the full transcript and summary at any time.

CV Scoring & Ranking

CV scoring is a two-part process. First, gates check for must-have requirements (qualifications, keywords, experience). Candidates who fail any gate are eliminated. Then, criteria score candidates on desirable attributes using weighted scoring. Each criterion has a weight, and the final score is a weighted percentage. The scoring engine is deterministic — the same CV against the same rubric always produces the same score.

Two-stage shortlisting separates the sift from the rank. Stage 1 (Sift) runs gate checks only and presents results for human review — you can override individual pass/fail decisions using toggles. Stage 2 (Rank) then runs full criteria scoring only on the candidates you selected in Stage 1. This gives you human oversight at the critical sift point before detailed scoring begins.

Yes. The "Generate Rubric from JD" feature accepts plain-text job descriptions and uses AI to extract gates (essential requirements) and criteria (desirable attributes) in the correct rubric format. It identifies qualification requirements, experience keywords, and skill-based criteria automatically. You can then review and adjust the generated rubric before saving.

AskAway accepts PDF and DOCX files. CVs are parsed locally to extract text, then structured using AI to identify personal details, employment history, qualifications, skills, and certifications.

Templates & Jobs

A template is a reusable rubric definition — it defines the gates and criteria for a type of role. A job is a specific recruitment exercise created from a template. You can create multiple jobs from the same template, each with its own candidates and scoring runs. Templates are version-controlled, so edits create new versions without affecting existing jobs.

Shared templates are visible to all users and can only be created or edited by administrators. They represent your organisation's standard rubrics. Local templates are private to the user who created them — useful for drafting or one-off roles.

Justification Interviews

A justification interview is a targeted follow-up interview designed to verify claims made in a candidate's CV. The AI interviewer is briefed on the candidate's parsed CV data and the job rubric, then probes specific experience claims, qualification details, and competency areas. It helps confirm that shortlisted candidates genuinely possess the skills and experience their CV suggests.

Data & Privacy

CV text and interview audio are processed using OpenAI's API. Under OpenAI's API data usage policy, data sent via the API is not used to train their models. No other third-party services receive candidate data. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Yes. Candidate records can be removed through the platform. You are responsible for ensuring your use of the platform complies with applicable data protection legislation, including informing candidates that their data will be processed using AI tools.

All application data is stored in a PostgreSQL database on infrastructure controlled by the service operator. Uploaded CV files are stored on the application server's file system. Data is not replicated to third-party cloud storage.
